Interview with Shriniwas Singh, Head of Packaging Development at Themis Medicare Ltd.
Q. Please tell us about your current role. What are your key focus areas and responsibilities?
A. As the Head of Packaging Development at Themis Medicare Ltd., I oversee the design, development, and execution of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions. My key focus areas include material optimization, regulatory compliance, cost efficiency, and the integration of advanced technologies into pharmaceutical packaging. Additionally, I work closely with cross functional teams to drive value engineering, automation, and sustainability initiatives.
I also serve as HOD Packaging Development (AGM), driving innovation, compliance, and sustainability in packaging. Beyond my corporate role, I actively contribute to industry knowledge as a Keynote Speaker & Panel Moderator at Global Conferences on Advanced Packaging, Regulatory Dynamics, and Strategic Challenges.
Q. In your opinion, what do you consider to be the greatest development in the plastics recycling industry in recent years?
A. One of the most significant advancements has been the rise of advanced recycling technologies, such as chemical recycling, which can break down plastics into their original monomers, allowing for true circularity. Additionally, the growing adoption of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
frameworks has encouraged businesses to rethink their packaging strategies and invest in sustainable alternatives.
Q. What special opportunities and challenges do you see in the Indian plastics recycling market compared to other regions?
A. India presents a unique landscape with vast opportunities in plastics recycling, driven by increasing regulatory support and growing environmental awareness. However, challenges such as inconsistent waste collection systems, a fragmented recycling infrastructure, and the need for
greater consumer participation still exist. Scaling up innovative recycling technologies and fostering collaboration between stakeholders will be key to overcoming these hurdles.
Q. How is the Indian government's policy and regulatory framework impacting the plastics recycling industry?
A. The Indian government's policies, particularly under the Plastic Waste Management Rules and EPR mandates, have significantly influenced the industry. These regulations are pushing brands to adopt recycled content, reduce single-use plastics, and improve waste segregation practices. While this creates a positive push towards sustainability, effective implementation and enforcement remain critical for long-term success.
Q. How do you see the sector developing in the next five to ten years?
A. The next decade will likely witness a stronger shift toward biodegradable and compostable plastics, alongside advancements in mechanical and chemical recycling. AI-driven waste sorting, blockchain for traceability, and increased investments in closed-loop systems will further enhance recycling efficiency. As sustainability becomes a priority, companies will integrate circular economy principles into their core business strategies.
Q. You will be speaking at the Recycling and Compounding Expo in India. Could you give us a preview of what you will be talking about?
A. At the RACE 2025 Expo, I will be discussing innovations and strategies in sustainable plastic packaging, with a focus on balancing functionality, cost-effectiveness, and environmental responsibility. I will also share insights on industry trends, regulatory implications, and collaborative efforts required to drive large-scale change in packaging sustainability.
